I was worried yesterday because both the honey and I had to go to work, leaving our diarrhea dog in the house alone. I got home around 5:45, and miracle of miracles, no messes! YAY! Boy, now I know a little bit of how new parents feel. Except babies have diapers.
Bucky seems to be quickly improving, maybe because of the antibiotic he's on.
This month's Bon Appetit magazine included an article called "The 7 Rules of the Italian Kitchen." Good stuff such as pay attention to what foods grow near you and what's in season, use leftovers creatively in new dishes, keep it simple, etc. But my favorite was this:
Sigh, Bucky is a sick little guy right now. I'll spare you the details, but I'll say this... diarrhea. In the house. We're getting the carpet cleaned but may have to get it replaced; it's in bad shape right now.
We took him to the vet this morning and she's concerned that it's actually a chronic condition (but obviously worse in the last two days). I always thought he was just still adjusting to his new food and getting better... but apparently he should have been fine by now. So, now Bucky is on an anti-biotic, de-wormer (just in case), and a low-residue prescription dog food. I hope he gets better soon, because this dog food sounds like crap... lots of grain, and it includes a chicken "by-product meal". Eesh... I only bought it because the vet assured me that this was best for Bucky since he has some kind of GI issue.
Work, work, work. We had a massive proposal to send -- which is good news for my company. It was a lotta work and all hands on deck, so my weekend was spent in the office, and running some errands. Now I'm feeling gratified that it's all done, off my desk, and well, it looked pretty damn good. Hopefully this means we'll get rich. Well, at least a step in that direction.
I did get a chance to go grocery shopping, and I did menu planning for the week -- something I always mean to do, but almost never actually do. I will successfully avoid eating out and eating cereal for dinner this week! On Sunday, I made a roasted wild Alaskan sockeye salmon with some mushroom risotto and a salad. Last night, I made a big rum roast with onions and had a few friends over for dinner. Served it with some sauteed kale and squash, and sweet potato fries. Tonight's menu is a leek, potato and feta tart; tomorrow - shrimp and corn in cream sauce over rice; Thursday, pasta with broccoli and chicken apple sausage.
It's not the cooking that's difficult or time-consuming -- it's the grocery shopping. If someone did that for me, I'd be able to get home-cooked meals on the table pretty easily. Maybe someday I can get a personal assistant. :)
I totally forgot to mention these other upcoming SD food events! I guess because I'm on a budget and won't be attending the pricey ones. So if you attend, please tell me how they were!

Yesterday was Bucky's training -- and he was a star pupil! Our trainer has been very pleased with his progress. He's learned sit and down, and now we're working on stay and come.
Sit and down were critical for Bucky, as he learns to get over his dog-aggressiveness. Out of fear, he'll launch at another dog, so we need to overpower his natural urge with obedience. And it's been working!
I'm very happy we adopted Bucky, and our adoption agency, Boston Buddies, was great and very honest. But, I've learned that when you adopt a dog, you don't really know what you're going to get until you've had the dog for a couple of weeks. Usually, the agencies get very limited information, and they only know what they observe. I wanted a dog-friendly dog, and I'm sure that Bucky will be dog-friendly within a couple of weeks max, but he wasn't exactly dog-friendly when we got him.
I highly recommend getting training for any dog, but a dog with aggression or bad habits must have training, or they will be a liability to you and a danger to themselves. It's a small investment over a dog's lifetime.
Anywho, in two weeks Bucky will get to venture out with other dogs! The honey and I were kind of sad that Bucky doesn't have any friends in the animal kingdom, but soon, soon!
If anyone in SD needs a trainer, ours is John's Natural Dog Training Company, and we like him a lot.
What summed up yesterday? Rest. I fell asleep at around 9:00, not having done anything on my to-do list (give Bucky a bath & brush his teeth, make a healthy dinner, read). Oh well, it felt good. Bucky will get his bath tonight.
Last night, the honey and I attended a Chef's Celebration dinner at Kitchen 1540 in the L'Auberge hotel in Del Mar. For $65, you get a four-course meal created by five premier San Diego chefs. Our featured chefs were:

So how was it? You guessed it, wonderful. The veal cheeks were amazingly tender. Every time I order "cheeks" of something it seems to be excellent.
I am not really a pate fan, but this dish must have been very good, because I enjoyed it. All the sides made it much more palatable to me, and the presentation was gorgeous.
The hiramasa crudo was a scrumptious little salty bite.
The Carta Fata Cookery lobster dish had a gorgeous presentation -- everything was steamed in a little bag, which our waitress cut open. The dish was overly spiced for my taste -- a whole lot of Indian type spices overwhelmed the lobster and made the ingredients difficult to distinguish. When you have ingredients like that you want to taste them. However, the seafood was tender and cooked nicely.
The venison was the highlight of my meal. Super tender, lots of flavor, and it didn't turn out gristly or gamey like venison can. I haven't been to Urban Solace yet, but this dish makes me want to go.
I didn't even get to try the striped bass, because the honey snarfed it before I could get a bite. Sneaky!
The dessert was also quite good, but I have to be honest -- my tastebuds were almost worn out by that point. The salted caramel was my favorite part of dessert.
We left stuffed and happy after a 3-hour dinner. Oh, and I have to say -- part of the excitement about the night was that it provided me an opportunity to wear a new Nanette Lepore dress I scored at Nordstrom Rack recently. It was divine.
My boss went to the Chef's Celebration dinner at Cowboy Star, and was raving about it. She sat at the bar, and got to see all the chefs interacting, which sounded really fun.
